LAWRENCE HIGH STUDENTS FOR PREVENTION

We have an amazing group of students from Lawrence High.  The New Tradition Youth Coalition called the FYI Club is dedicated to working within their peer group to encourage drug and alcohol free lifestyles.  Please support these students by grabbing the family and attending the Lawrence High Talent Show on November 2nd. 

The 7th Annual LHS FYI Talent show will be in the Lawrence High auditorium on Wednesday, Nov 2, 2011 at 7:00pm!

FYI Youth Coalition sponsors a Talent Show to provide an opportunity for students to participate in a performance event, even if they do not participate in choir, orchestra or band. The proceeds from this show will benefit students in 2 ways:  first, half of the proceeds will help LHS students with financial needs throughout the rest of this year, and second, half of the proceeds will provide a scholarship for students who have worked in prevention. Tickets may be purchased at the door before the event: adults-$4, students K-12-$3 and children ages 4 and under are free. Local businesses support this event by donating dozens of prizes used for the contestants as well as door prizes for the audience. Join us as we celebrate the voices and talents of our local youth!

Underage Drinking-Related Hospital Department Visits Nearly Double over the 4th of July Weekend
Hospital emergency department visits involving underage drinking nearly double during the Fourth of July Holiday weekend according to a new study by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). The study reveals that daily underage drinking-related visits to hospital emergency departments are 87 percent higher during the Fourth of July weekend than they are on an average day in July. The report estimates that on an average day in July, there are 502 hospital emergency department visits involving underage alcohol use. For the three day Fourth of July weekend however, the number of daily hospital emergency department visits jumps to 938.
"Underage drinking is not a harmless right of passage. It has far-reaching consequences. In addition to emergency department visits, injuries, arrests and embarrassment, 5,000 deaths in people under age 21 are linked to alcohol each year," said SAMHSA Administrator Pamela S. Hyde, J.D. "Parents are a leading influence in their children’s decision to avoid alcohol. To help parents make the tough job of raising children a little easier, SAMHSA provides an online action plan to help parents talk with their children about expectations regarding alcohol use."
The study was developed as part of the agency’s strategic initiative on data, outcomes, and quality - an effort to inform policy makers and service providers on the nature and scope of behavioral health issues. It is based on SAMHSA’s 2008 Drug Alert Warning Network (DAWN) report. DAWN is a public health surveillance system that monitors drug-related hospital emergency department visits reported throughout the nation.

Chandler DeWitt just finished her freshman year of college. She wrote Inside Out: Real Stories about the Inner Choices That Shape our Lives with hopes that its stories and information would help teens be true to themselves and resist the dangerous choices young adults often face.

Stacey DeWitt, Chandler's mother, speaks around the country to parents, teens and educators. She is the founder and CEO of Connect With Kids, which produces television documentaries and educational programs to help parents and educators discuss tough teen issues: bullying, drugs and alcohol, Internet safety, and trends such as sexting, anxiety, addiction.

Visitors to this free health-screening website receive personalized feedback, finding out if their alcohol consumption is likely to be within safe limits -- or if it may be harmful to their health now, or in the future. They also find out whether they drink more or less than other people of their age and gender.


AlcoholScreening.org was developed by Join Together, a project of the Boston University School of Public Health. Based on the AUDIT (Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test), a standard in screening instruments, this simple, anonymous test takes only a few minutes and provides confidential results. AlcoholScreening.org was launched in April 2001, and the website delivered its millionth health screening on April 7, 2009.

TEENS HOME ALONE

Parenting tips for parents with teens who are too old for day care and spend time home alone when parents are working or out of town. If your home has no parent supervision during certain parts of the dayand other teens know it, they may put undue pressure on your teen. The most dangerous times for teens is between 3pm and 7pm. We can set up our teens for disaster or, prepare them for safe, stress free times at home. Talk about internet use, entertaining the opposite sex, defending themselves against intruders, and how to answer the phone. Set parameters on who has permission to come over. Give your teen a schedule of things to do, work and fun to stave off boredom and loneliness.
